Grown up and driving

Sam, our 17-year old has been driving since December 2008, and life has changed. My husband and I each have a car; and one of the cars no longer sits in the driveway during the evenings. Nope, the teenager has it. He has sort of become the taxi for his friends. He's pretty smart though; he and his friends, when they go out, and drive around to pick up someone else, go to the movies, and/or take each back home, have made a deal to contribute a few dollars each for the gas. Sam comes home, and gives the money either to his dad, if he drove his car, or me, if he drove mine.

However, since my husband's car is a sedan, the teen prefers to drive that one over my station wagon. I don't understand... it's bigger, more spacious! Anyway, this brings me to our other son, Ben.

The odd thing is, Ben, my soon-to-be 19-year old still isn't interested in getting his driver's licence. He's in no hurry to get behind the wheel, and I do find that odd, although I have to say relieved, sort of. He says he enjoys taking the bus to get where he wants to go. He goes downtown, and to school, meets his friends wherever they agree to meet, and he has a friend who has a driver's licence. That's good, but I still wonder why he's not interested.

Ben took his written test last year, and his learner's permit will expire in July 2009. He says he will call the driving school, but it's April, and he has not taken the step yet to call. Well, to each his own pace.

As long as they remain safe and healthy. That's all a mother can wish for.
